LATE MR. V. YATES
A military funeral was given Boer War veteran, Mr. Victor Yates, at the Church of England cemetery on Tuesday. Boer War veterans were represented by Messrs W R. Nowland, D. C. Millar, and W. Scott. R.S.L. members acted as pall-bearers and the casket was draped with the Union Jack. Members of the sub-branch formed a guard of honor at the grates of the churchyard, while Mr. R. H. Griffiths sounded the Last Post and Reveille at the graveside. The Rev. F. W. Rush officiated.
The late Mr. Yates was born in Newcastle 76 years ago, and was the son of the late Mr. Michael and Mrs. Catherine Yates. He served on the N.S.W. Railways for a little under 50 years, and on his retirement was awarded the Imperial Service Medal. During the time the Muswellbrook R.S.L. Race Club was holding meetings at Skellatar, Mr. Yates raced several well - known performers with outstanding success. He was a member of the Muswellbrook ,R.S.L., and was one of its most popular members.
Deceased is survived by sons, John (Newcastle), Michael (Muswellbrook), Mrs. W P (Katie) Brown, Mrs. R. F. (Ethel) Jelley, Mrs. F (Frances) Murphy, and one sister, Mrs. A, DowelL
His wife predceased him by
two years.
