Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When Percy Norman Young enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. J. Young, Spring Hill. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 20, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs J. Young, Spring Hill. He also appears to have had an association with the Maitland area in NSW, where his name is included on the Maitland Boer War Memorial.
Percy Norman Young was born on 27 Mar 1877 in Queensland, a son to Thomas Crawfort Young and Jane Williamson Young (nee Fratson). He married Christina Maude Sampson on 13 Jun 1904 in Queensland and they 1 child while living at South Brisbane.
It appears he had ventured to New Zealand in 1905 for work with his wife and child remaining in Brisbane. He was working at a flax mill owned by a Mr. Scotcher on the Piako River, Waikato, when he had and unfortunate accident. On 6 Aug 1905 he was aboard a punt on the river laden with flax and being towed by a steamer to the mill when it lurched suddenly and he fell overboard, resurfaced but was unable to be rescued. Newspaper reports at the time noted his wife and child were in South Brisbane, Qld, and that he was a veteran of the South African (Boer) War.
