Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Walter Ziebell enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his sister Mrs W. Ksulke, Hollington, near Nanango via Esk. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 1 p. 73, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his sister Mrs. L. Kissulke, Colinton. His sister Helena Agatha Mathilda Ziebell had married Wilhelm Kassulke in 1894 in Queensland.

Walter Ziebell was born about 1881 in Balfanz, Neustettin, Pomerania, Prussia, German Empire, a son to Wilhelm Ziebell and Auguste Caroline Ziebell (nee Gieske). Information hasn't been sourced to confirm when he came to Queensland, Australia, with his parents and siblings.

Walter found himself in trouble with the law on a number of different occasions after he returned from his war service. in 1919 he found himself in trouble with the Land Commissioner over an application for a selection for which discharged soldiers were to be given preference.

The selection involved was for a parcel of land adjoining one he already owned in the Nanango district. The selection had already been granted to a discharged soldier who decided he did not want to meet the condition of living on the land while it was being improved and surrended the selection. On the same day that soldier's solicitor made application for Walter Ziebell to be granted the selection, which on application to the court by the Commissioner was found to involve collusion and Walter's application was refused.

Walter worked as a farmer/grazier on his 630 acre property at Johnstone, Goomeri.
