Walter Henry AUST – 3604
Private Walter Henry Aust was born in Wiltshire, England on the 3rd of March, 1877. For 5 years, Aust was an apprentice stone cutter in England; however, at the time he enlisted, he was working as an orchardist. Aust had not previously served nor belonged to any military services before he enlisted for World War I. He was married to Flora Aust and together they had two children.
Aust enlisted on the 6th of March, 1917 in Adelaide, South Australia at the age of 40. He embarked 4 months later, on the H.M.A.T. Port Melbourne A16, on the 16th of July. Aust was discharged from war on the 27th of June, 1918 as he was medically unfit. No other injuries during his service were recorded. After 1 year and 114 days of service, he returned back to Australia on the H.M.A.T. Marathon A74.
In 1921, Aust received the British War Medal, given to him as recognition of his service as a soldier in the war. Aust died at the age of 84 from natural causes in North Adelaide, South Australia. Two days after passing, Aust was buried at Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia, where he joined his wife, Flora.
