Died on this date – 11th December…… Sydney Montgomery Daley was born at Carlton, Tasmania on 7th September, 1884. His birth was registered in the district of Sorell, Tasmania. (Place of birth of Carlton listed by his wife for the Roll of Honour. He stated on his Attestation Papers that he was born at Richmond)

His father – Daniel Daley died on 28th October, 1891 at Hobart, Tasmania.

Sydney Montgomery Daley married Beatrice Elsie Kromer in 1912 in Tasmania.

On 31st January, 1916 Sydney Montgomery Daley enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) in Melbourne, Victoria as a 31 year old, married, Butcher from 20 High Street, North Hobart, Tasmania. He enlisted under the name of “Richard Daley”. Richard had previously served 6 years in the Royal Australian Navy 1905 - 1910.

Private Richard Daley, Service number 4680, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Euripides (A14) on 4th April, 1916 with the 6th Infantry Brigade, 23rd Infantry Battalion, 12th Reinforcements & disembarked at Suez (no date given).

No Information is included in Private Richard Daley’s Service Record File to show when & how he travelled from Suez to Wiltshire, England. Usually new recruits were sent to England first for further training as reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 2nd October, 1916 Private Daley was written up for an offence at Salisbury, Wiltshire - neglected to obey standing orders & was awarded 10 days C.B. – Confined to Barracks.

Private Daley was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire, from 6th Training Battalion, on 7th October, 1916 with Asthma & discharged 11 days later, on 17th October, 1916.

He was re-admitted to Fargo Military Hospital on 1st December, 1916 with Asthma.

Private Richard Daley died at 5.45 p.m. on 11th December, 1916 in Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire, England from Asthma followed by cardiac failure.

He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
