Died on this date - 16th August......Private Josiah William Osborne was born at Renmark, South Australia around 1895. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 25th January, 1915 as a 19 year old Labourer from Hackney, South Australia.
Private Osborne embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on HMAT Geelong (A2) on 31st May, 1915 with the 7th Infantry Brigade, 27th Infantry Battalion “B” Company then later embarked from Alexandria on 4th September, 1915 to join M.E.F. at Gallipoli.
Private Osborne was admitted to 13th Casualty Clearing Hospital at Anzac on 24th September, 1915 with severe Pyrrhoea; transferred to Hospital at Mudros & eventually rejoined his Battalion on 29th December, 1915.
After the evacuation of Gallipoli Private Osborne arrived in Alexandria on 10th January, 1916. He arrived in France on 21st March, 1916.
Private Osborne was wounded in action in France on 5th August, 1916 & invalided to England where he was admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, England on 10th August, 1916.
Private Josiah William Osborne died on 16th August, 1916 at 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, England from wounds received in action in France – shrapnel wounds to buttocks, left foot & head. He was buried in Lodge Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, West Midlands, England – his name is remembered on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Screen Wall B10. 294 as he does not have a headstone.
