William was born in Salisbury on 23 March 1888 and is recorded as having had four sisters. He married Louisa DAVIS in 1916.

Louisa had been previously married and had two daughters Winifred and Eveline. There was one son born to the marriage of William and Louisa, Howard born in 1917.

William enlisted in the AIF on 5 January 1916 and was allocated service number 5035. He was attached to the 27th Infantry Battalion. The battalion embarked for Europe on 12 August 1916 to France via the UK. On 24 November 1916, it is recorded he contracted influenza and was hospitalised. He re-joined the unit in France on 16 December 1916.

The 27th Battalion took part in two attacks to the east of Flers in the Somme Valley, both of which slowed and floundered in the Somme mud. In September 1917, the battalion took part in the battle of Menin Road followed up with the capture of Broodseinde Ridge. On 4 May 1917, Pte MOSS suffered a gunshot wound to the back as well as being gassed. On 15 May 1917, he was returned to Australia and was discharged as medically unfit. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
William MOSS died in Adelaide on 3 June 1966.
