Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School
Ernest Albert Goodes was the son of Annie Goodes, his father being unknown. Ernest was born in Mount Pleasant, SA on the 16th of February 1893 and his home town was Harrogate, Mount Barker. He worked as a labourer, and he went to school at Mount Pleasant Public School.
Ernest enlisted on the 14th of November 1914 under the service number of 1528 and into the Australian Imperial Force in the 10th Battalion. He embarked as a Private on the 19th of February 1915 on the HMAT Runic. The 10th Infantry Battalion was one of six Battalions sent to the Dardanelles, also known as the Strait of Gallipoli. Ernest's time at Gallipoli was cut short when he contracted diarrhoea whilst he was there. He was later diagnosed with an Enteric Disease and then was transferred to the Mena House and then had his diagnosis changed again to Colitis. It took Ernest around 6 months of recovery.
After his lengthy recovery Ernest was transferred to the 50th Infantry Battalion and was promoted to Lance Corporal. Ernest later embarked at Bareilles, France and four months later on the 13-3-17, and he recieved another promotion and became a Temporary Corporal. About a month later on the 2-4-17 Ernest was reported missing and 6 months later on the 31-10-17 his status was changed to KIA. Sadly, Ernest was one of the tens of thousands Australians to not make it back from war.
His final rank was officially Corporal and he recieved 2 medals, the Star Medal and the Victory Medal.
