John Henry McCashney was born at Trentham, Victoria on 21/1/1884.

His Father, Henry William McCashney owned a timber mill in the Trentham area and John worked for him as a mill worker.

John was a talented footballer (Australian Rules) and played for Trentham, Kyneton and in 1903 played two games for South Melbourne, a team in the VFL.

He was a Freemason and a member of the Trentham Masonic Lodge.

John enlisted in the AIF on 8/1/1916 in Melbourne and was allotted to the 39th Battalion.

He was wounded in action on 28/1/1917 and returned to duty on 23/2/1917.

He was seriously wounded on 7/6/1917 during the Battle of Messines and was shipped to the UK for recovery. After time in the Southwark Military Hospital he was shipped back to Australia on the hospital ship "Karoola", arriving in Australia on 25/11/1917.

He was finally discharged from the AIF on 8/3/1918.

John moved to the Benalla area and set up his own timber mill near Mansfield.

He married Myrtle Veronica Thompson in Benalla during 1922.

He continued in the timber industry with mills in the Toombullup and Mansfield districts.

John died at his home in Benalla on 23/4/1952 and is buried at the Benalla Cemetery.
