James Dudley PROCTOR was born in 1880 in Bow (Old Ford)  Middlesex, England

His parents were Henry PROCTOR and Catherine TOPHAM who had married in 1866 in Greenwich UK - he was one of at least 8 children

In the 1881 UK census the family were living in 8 Prince Arthurs Avenue, Bow

James married Louisa Mary Ann STRONG in Edmonton UK in 1911 and had 3 children but only one survived - Louisa died in 1976 in Adelaide SA

Rose Florence b. 1906 Essex UK who married David Norman BERRESFORD in 1925 in St Johns Church Adelaide and died on 19th July 1984 in Brisbane, Queensland - buried Mt Thompson Memorial Gardens

His daughter Kate (b.1912, England) died on board the ship Indarra on 13 Dec 1912 on the way to South Australia, and a son, James, (b.1914, Adelaide) died a few months later -  Newspaper article about the Measles outbreak on the Indarra (nla.gov.au)

James enlisted on 19th August, 1914 with the 10th Australian Infantry Battalion (E Company) which embarked on 20th October 1914 from Adelaide on the ship HMAT Ascanius

He had 12 years previous service  in the RGA Imperial Force, 3 years on active service in African War and received the Queens Medal and 5 bars and the Kings medal and 2 bars

In WW1 he received the 1914-15 Star, British War medal and Victory Medal

He died from wounds received on 22nd June 1915  and is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt

 

"THE LATE PRIVATE J. D. W. PROCTOR.

Private James D. Ward Proctor, of the 10th Battallon, Australian Infantry, who was severely wounded at the Dardanelles, and died shortly afterwards at Heliopolis Hospital, Egypt, formerly served for 12 years in the Royal Garrison Artillery, England. He saw over three years' active service in the South African War for which he received the Queen's medal with five bars, and the King's medal with two bars.
