Robert Lawrence Gabell was born in Stepney, South Australia, on the 2 of November 1896. His next of kin was his mother Caroline Gabell and he was working as a driver. At the age of 19 and 7 months, he enlisted into the Army on the 21st of May 1915. He described himself as 5 foot and 7 inches with brown hair and brown eyes.
Mr Gabell embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on 14 September 1915 and joined the base light horse regiment and trained at a camp in Moascar. Robert was a part of the Base Light Horse regiment until the 18th of December 1915 when he joined the 9th Light Horse Regiment for extra strength.
Gabell may have been a part of the Battle of Romani 4/8/16-5/8/16, Battle of Magdhaba 23/12/16-9/1/17, Attack on Beersheba 31/10/17-31/10/17 and Egyptian Uprising 1919 1/3/19-30/4/19. It is not certain how long he was a part of any of these battles due to him having long stays at hospital and his rest camp. The main cause of these stays were from a continual headache and other conditions that are unclear from the Service Records, other than Appendectory being specified on 8th August 1918..
Robert Gabell was granted 53 days demobilisation leave from the 2/7/19. He was later discharged from the A.I.F. on the 24 August 1919 at his own request.
Robert Lawrence Gabell lived to the age of 76 years old until he passed away on the 8th of May 1973. He was later buried at Centennial Park in Pasadena, South Australia.
