Sydney went to France with the 48th Battalion on 21 July 1916. He was wounded in action on 28 March 1918 when shot in the leg and was wounded a second time when shot in the left ankle on 8 August. Sydney was invalided to England on 13 August and returned to Australia on the Orca on 19 February 1919, then discharged on 28 May.
