Howard enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 25 September 1925 and served as a Driver, Service No. 1993 with the 5th Divisional Ammunition Column (previously served with the 14th Field Artillery Brigade). He served in Egypt and France. He returned to Australia on 26 June 1929. He married Blanche Stella Cranwell in 1921-she died 1962
He was the son of James Martin and Eliza Bowell Martin [died 1933]
