Johann Hermann Wohlfeil was a teamster and solider. He was born in Waterloo South Australia and lived in Morgan. He enlisted at the age of 41 and 7 months on 5th of May 1916. He was listed as Private rank in the 32nd and 5th Machine Gun Battalions. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on 12th of August 1916. He traveled to England where he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He quickly recovered and marched with his 32nd Battalion in Etaples, a coastal port in France near the Western Front. He contacted trench foot and attended hospital in Brighton, England. He returned to the Western Front despite all injuries and sickness, and served with multiple other units including the 5th Division Salvage Company, the 8th Machine Gun Company and the 5th Machine Gun Battalion. On the 30th of April 1919 he marched out of France to England to return to Australia.
