OUR BELOVED CLAUDE UNTIL THE MORNING BREAKS AND SHADOWS FLEE AWAY

"LATE LIEUT. W. C. SHELDON.

Lieut. Walter Claude Sheldon (48th Battalion), whose death occurred on October 4, in the 8th General Hospital, Rouen, France, was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon, of Gladstone street, Fullarton Estate. He was born at Morgan on April 12, 1895. Later the family removed to Wolseley, and the deceased spent most of his school days there. He finished his education in 1911, at the Norwood High School. He then worked for about two and a half years for the South Australian Woolen Company, but was a stenographer at Messrs. Hudd & Sons' establishment when war was declared. Having volunteered with the A.I.F. he left the Outer Harbour on February 7, 1916, as a sergeant of the 3rd Reinforcemcnts of the 32nd. He spent three months in Egypt, and was drafted into the 48th Battalion as a private, and sent to France. Shortly afterwards he was wounded. He regained his three stripes and a congratulation card for good work and devotion to duty, and soon went into action again. In February, 1917, he gained his commission as a second lieutenant, received further recognition for bravery and devotion to duty, and was made a first lieutenant. Lieut. Sheldon spent three months at an English bombing school, mentioned in despatches in December, 1917, and early in 1918 went back to France again, where he served until his death. The deceased was for some years connected with the Parkside Methodist Sunday School and Church, where he made many friends." - from the Adelaide Observer 28 Dec 1918 (nla.gov.au)
