Frederick Gordon Mullins was born at Wangaratta, Victoria, on 7 July 1917, the son of Alfred Mullins (a railways employee) and Ethel Emily Kirkham. He was the second youngest of nine children. The family lived around the Beechworth, Wangarrata, and Oxley area between 1900 and when Fred's younger brother Reg was born in 1923 (see Reginald Norman Mullins DFC). Fred was married to Nellie Eileen Nevin in 1943 at West Maitland NSW.
Fred enlisted in the Australian Army as a gunner (service no. V51914) on 9 Aug 1940 at Armadale in Victoria. He wsa discharged 12 July 1941 while with 15 Field Regt. The records show he was re-enlisted as a gunner on 3 May 1941 at Royal Park, VIC, and discharged on 13 Aug 1945 while serving with 9 RFCTS 2/2 F RGT (2/2 Field Regt).
Apart from Reg, other brothers who served in WWII were Leslie Alfred Mullins, Bert Arthur Mullins, and Raymond George Mullins.
