About Ron
Sadly, Ron Holmes passed away on February 12th, 2020. He was 95 years old. He will be dearly missed by all of his loved ones.
The best way that you can honour Ron’s memory is to read his books, particularly his theological ones. In his latter years, Ron felt very strongly that people needed to read the bible in regards to the context that it was written – historical, cultural, and literary. He was frustrated and upset by the rise of of fundamentalism and biblical literalism. It didn’t bother him as to whether people bought his books (you can order them elsewhere on this site) or download them for free (you can also do that via the various book links) – he just wanted to share his thoughts and prompt others to think, too. This is the reason why this website was created – he hoped that his ability to share his thoughts on these topics might carry on beyond his ability to speak them. And if you read and enjoy them… maybe pass them on to someone else who might, too.
Many thanks, Amy (Grandaughter).
Ron Holmes was born at Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia, in 1924. His father owned and ran a bush timber mill. The family was very involved in the nearby Church of Christ and all attended regularly. After his local primary school education Ron travelled some 80 kilometres by bus each day for 4 years to attend High School at Frankston.
Apart from 6 months in a radio factory, Ron worked on the mill until he was 18, when he then joined the RAAF and trained as a Radar Technician, at that time a highly secret area of work. He served during World War 2 from 1942 to 1945, including a period in Western Australia and then in New Guinea.
After the war Ron studied for four years at the Churches of Christ College of the Bible, at Glen Iris in Melbourne, and then served in Victorian and South Australian churches.
At 60 Ron retired from full-time church work on a Returned Serviceman’s pension, in order to write. He has had 10 books published and self-published several others, as well as writing regular Newspaper columns.
Ron is a licenced Radio Amateur and some of his antenna designs have been published in Australian and overseas Amateur Radio magazines. He is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. and a number of his magic routines in are in “Abra Cadabra”, a famous English magic magazine. His magical skills accompanied his work throughout both his war and then Church years. His local radio programs and TV involvement with the Christian Television association gave him experience speaking to wide audiences.
