Died on this date – 28th February…… Fred Archer Harding was born on 3rd August, 1893 at Ottery St. Mary, Devon, England.
He joined the Royal Navy on 11th November, 1913 for a period of 12 years & had been a labourer in an Iron Foundry when he joined.
Fred Archer Harding first served in Vivid II as Stoker 2nd Class from 11th November, 1913. He was transferred to Highflier on 26th March, 1914 then returned to Vivid II from 2nd August, 1914 until 12th October, 1914.
On 13th October, 1914 Stoker 2nd Class Fred Archer Harding joined Conqueror. He was promoted to Stoker 1st Class on 11th November, 1914.
He returned to Vivid II on 23rd November, 1917 until 26th November, 1917 where he was transferred to Royal Australian Navy as a temporary engagement for 3 years from 27th November, 1917.
Stoker 1st Class Harding was attached to H.M.A.S. Sydney, Royal Australian Navy. His new service number was 8476. He was promoted to Acting/Leading Stoker on 11th July, 1918.
On 28th February, 1919 Leading Stoker Fred Archer Harding died at Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham from Influenza & Pneumonia, aged 25 years.
He was buried in Exeter Higher Cemetery, Devon, England – Plot number 22 and has a simple granite marker headstone. He is named on a Memorial near to the Chapel & his death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
