Enlisted with the Citizens "Militia", in Nov 1929, where he remained until the breakout of the second World War. During his time at the Citizens Militia he rose from Private up to the rank of Company Quartermaster Sergeant (CQMS).

He served with the rank of Staff Sergeant in the 2nd/AIF, and following a period as a POW, returned home.
