BUCKLAND Frederick Ray
Unit Training Depot
1895-1915
Frederick’s father was born in Somerset, England. He migrated to Australia where he took up land near Caniambo Victoria. In 1894 he married Emily Margaret Skinner and had two children, Fred (1895) and Kathleen (1898).
Fred was 20 years old when he enlisted on 27 July 1915. While doing preliminary training at Seymour he contracted Meningitis and died after a short illness at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne on 1 September.
He didn’t embark for overseas, nor did he see any active service, yet in the eyes of the AIF his intention was to serve his country. Therefore his father was sent a Memorial Scroll and Plaque in his honour. He was buried in the Gowangardie cemetery close to home.
A tree was planted in Fred’s memory in 1918. A copper plaque which marked this tree is now affixed to the external wall of the Memorial Hall, Violet Town. Fred’s name appears on the Main Honour Board, Violet Town Memorial Hall and the Caniambo Hall Honour Board.
