Errol was born 23 Nov 1924 in Brisbane, Queensland, the son of Emily Ellen Jones (nee Morris) and Rob Roy Jones (who died in 1925).

Errol enlisted for service with the RAAF as aircrew and trained as a Wireless Operations Air Gunner. He saw active service in the U.K.
