Matthew was the seventh of eight children of John (James) Brennan (born 1845 in Vasse, WA) and Catherine (Kate) Dawson (born 1857 in Vasse, WA). John (a Farmer) and Kate married in 1879 in Bunbury, WA and settled at Toodyay before moving back to the  Busselton region in 1891. The family moved between Toodyay, Fremantle and Busselton - John worked as a Farmer and a Railway Porter and Crossing Keeper.

Matthew had worked as a Labourer in the Augusta - Margaret River Region in WA, and listed his occupation as Fisherman when he enlisted in the ACMF in June 1942. He served as a Private (Service No:W83925) with 5 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps and was Discharged in October 1945. Four of Matthew's brothers  and a Brother-in-Law also served in the Military.

Matthew remained in the Augusta-Margaret River region of WA where he worked as a Labourer. He died in 1959.
