Died on this date – 14th March…… Private Thomas Michael Gorman was falsely stated to be born at [Rawal Pindi, India* in 1890, is very incorrect */ as per stated in his Attestation Papers in his WWI Service Record]. Private Thomas Michael Gorman was actually born on the 6th April 1887, at Menzies Street, Petrie Terrace, Brisbane City Qld., to parents Patrick John & Mary Gorman. Information for the Roll of Honour for Private Thomas Michael Gorman, completed by his brother – Peter Gorman, stated that Thomas was born in Australia at Petrie Terrace, Brisbane, Queensland, this information was and always has been correct. Refer to the [QLD Birth Certificate of Thomas Michael Gorman, Registration No: 1887/ 38789].
Thomas Gorman enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 9th March, 1916 at Rockhampton, Queensland as a 25 year old, single, Mechanic. His next of kin was listed as his mother – Mrs Mary Gorman, Government House, Brisbane, Queensland.
On 8th August, 1916 Private Gorman, Service number 6019, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on HMAT Itonus (A50) & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 18th October, 1916.
Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. These were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
Private Gorman was admitted to Fovant Military Hospital, Wiltshire on 7th November, 1916. He was admitted again on 31st December, 1916 this time with Jaundice.
He was marched in to 4th Training Battalion at Codford, Wiltshire on 29th January, 1917 from Hospital. The next line in Private Gorman’s Statement of Service form recorded he was marched in from Fovant Hospital on 12th February, 1917.
On 12th February, 1917 Private Gorman was charged with several crimes - being absent without leave for 4 hours and drunk in lines. He was awarded 14 days detention & was placed in custody awaiting trial for 1 day. He forfeited 15 days pay as a result of his crimes.
He was admitted sick with jaundice to Group Hospital at Codford on 23rd February, 1917 then admitted to Military Hospital at Sutton Veny on 24th February, 1917.
Private Thomas Michael Gorman died on 14th March, 1917 at Sutton Veny Military Hospital, Wiltshire, England of jaundice.
He was buried at St. Mary’s New (Anzac) Churchyard, Codford, Wiltshire, where 30 other WW1 Australian War Graves & 66 New Zealand War Graves are located.
