He was called up for National Service in the Australian Army on 20 April 1966 and was allocated Service No: 1731890.  He completed three months recruit training at 3rd Training Battalion, Singleton, New South Wales and a further three months corps training at the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps (RAAOC) Training Centre, Bonegilla, Victoria.  Following corps training he was posted to the 6th Ordnance Field Park ( 6OFP) at Gaythorne, Brisbane, Queensland.  In Feb 1967 he completed a Jungle Training Course (JTC) preparatory for posting to Vietnam. He left Australia for Vietnam on 21 Mar 1967 as part of the advance party for his unit 6 OFP (Det) and arrived at the 1st Australian Task Force Base, Nui Dat, South Vietnam on 22Mar 1967.

He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on 26 June 1967.  On 3 Oct 1967 he returned to Australia (on the first American R & R flight) for five days rest and recreation leave, and returned to Vietnam on 11 Oct 1967.  He returned to Australia on 5 Feb 1968 and proceeded on leave until his discharge from his National Service obligations on 19 April 1968, after two years service.  Subsequent to his discharge he was required to spent three years compulsory service in the Regular Army Reserve, Northern Command.
