Part of a social family in Melbourne, Nan wanted to serve and she applied for the Women's Royal Australian Navy as a driver. Her role was to be attached to thee Navy headquarters in Melbourne and chauffeur ranking officials.
A keen horsewoman, Nan competed in many showjumping events before enlisting.
In Jan 1944, she married Clive Newton "Bardie" Wawn and settled on a small dairy farm before moving to a Soldier Settlement property near Dunkeld Victoria
