Horace was born in New South Wales the son of Alfred Martin and Catherine Gash. He married Elizabeth Maud Carlow in New South Wales in 1911. Elizabeth died in 1914 at Balmain New South Wales. Horace then moved to Redcliffe in Queensland where he married Fanny Rachel Mason in August 1915 before enlisting in September 1916. Rachel was the daughter of Thomas and Catherine Mason who lived at Woody Point. She died in October 1918 at Redcliffe and Horace was discharged on compassionate grounds returning to Australia in January 1919.
