Hubert Esme Govett who was killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 18th December 1915 was the third son of the late Mr. Robert Govett of St. Albans, Geelong (Vic) and Culloden (Qld.). He was born in 1890 and was at the Preparatory School in 1899 and 1900 and then went to Geelong College. He left for England when he was 17 years of age to study engineering at the Crystal Palace, and was employed at the British Thomson Houston firm of engineers at Ruby for some years, where he was very popular. He was a keen sportsman and motorist, equally good with gun, rod or rifle. He joined the Royal Engineers as a Sapper in August 1914 and quickly rose to the rank of a Corporal.
