Hubert Frederic Garrett who was killed in action at Gallipoli on 4th June 1915 was the son of Edward Thomas and Norah Garrett. He was born in 1894 and entered the School in 1905 and had a distinguished School career. He was Witherby Scholar in 1907. He was in the athletic team which won 'The Argus' and 'The Australasian' Cup in 1909, winning the quarter-mile (under 16) brilliantly. He was in the cricket team in 1910 and 1911. He went to England on leaving School in 1911 and entered at Queen's College, Cambridge. He played a deal of crick in England, ans was spoken of as a promising bowler. In his last year he was unable to play, owing to an injury to his arm, and thus was prevented from winning his 'Blue'. He was a member of the Somerset County Team. When war broke out he joined the Cambridge O.T.C. in October 1914 and in the following month was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant to 9th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. In December he was promoted to Lieutenant and Adjutant. He and two other officers were detailed for service and attached to the 1st Dublin Fusiliers and went to Gallipoli, where he landed on 1st June. He was at first reported missing, but later news told of his having been killed. A brother officer wrote: "We have had very sad news about Hubert. It appears that a staff-officer came into the trench his company was occupying and said that the trench immediately in front of them was not being held by the enemy and must be occupied by our own men. However, a machine gun on our left was holding up progress. He thereupon ordered town platoons to be sent forward to occupy the trench and enfilade the gun and put it out of action. Hubert led his platoon forward, but no sooner had they crossed the parapet than three machine guns opened fire from the supposedly unoccupied trench with murderous effect. The men were seen to stagger and fall, and among them were the two boys. They died like gallant officers and gentlemen. Out of the two platoons 70 were missing.
