In a Kentish graveyard
I live in an English Kentish village called Otford, which lies 20 miles south-east of the centre of London. It still retains most of its beautiful countryside and has a quiet and peaceful grave yard adjoining its 1000 year old parish church.
In a far corner adjoining the footpath to Otford station lies the grave of my mother and father-in-law. As ivy growing from a nearby fence was threatening to obscure their grave I asked the parish council for the growth to be cut-back. When this was done it was discovered that several other graves nearer the fence had been brought to light.
Among those revealed was a Commonwealth War Grave with the insignia of the the "Australian Imperial Force" engraved at the top, followed by the following inscription:
NX5546 Sergeant
J. G. SHERIDAN
2/4 Infantry Battalion
3rd March 1965 Aged 55
Dearly loved
and sadly missed
By his sisters
Mary and Frances
I have been trying to find out more about the soldier who is interned below.
If anybody has further information about this 'rediscovered' grave in our village churchyard I would be fascinated to hear from them.
