He was born at Warrambeen, Australia, the son of William Henry and Jessie Gillett; of Sebastopol, Victoria, Australia. He was 28 and served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Otago Mounted Rifles.

His Mother received his Service Medal - the 1914-1915 Star
