Prior to joining the Army he was working in wangaratta on the water tower in his teens , during the depression he was working with the road gangs and irrigation construction crews in the Goulbourn Valley Victoria —Tallygaroopna area. He was known to participate in “boxing bouts” and after the war Alfred bred bull terriers and often went to his local RSL Memorial Cenotaph to “ talk to his dad” who had beenKkilled in Action in oct 1917 after being transferred to an Artillery unit.
