He was a 16 y.o. Deck Boy in the Australian Merchant Navy, the son of Sydney Charles Bertram and Isabel Beryl Abbott of Camberwell, Victoria.

David died when the H.M.A.S. 'Centaur' was torpedoed.

His brother, Flying Officer 400404 Sydney Charles Bertram ABBOTT (/explore/people/617648) also served, and was killed in an aircraft accident in Norfolk, England on 09 Aug 1943. Sydney was laid to rest in Marham Cemetery.
