Allan was born in Grafton and raised on the family farm located at Great Marlow near Grafton, NSW. Great Marlow is a farming area about 5 miles from Grafton.
Allan received his early education at Alumny Creek Public School, attending from October 29, 1928 until October 31, 1935. He enlisted at Grafton on October 20, 1941. Following the war Allan took up cane cutting and was later employed by the Grafton Brewing Company and Grafton City Council. In conjunction with his brother Ron, he also operated a market garden from his Grafton home and did contract rotary hoe work for local farmers. Allan died on December 15, 2001 aged 80 years. He was buried in Clarence Lawn Cemetery, 703 Armidale Road, South Grafton NSW.
