WW1 Australian War Graves in England/UK 

Died on this date - 24th November......Private James Cowan was born at Albert Park, South Melbourne, Victoria in 1887. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 13th November, 1916 as a 29 year old Clerk from Fremantle, Western Australia.

Private Cowan was transferred from Camp Details at Sutton Mandeville, Wiltshire to 12th Training Battalion at Codford, Wiltshire on 6th March, 1917. He was admitted to Hospital at Codford twice with Influenza March, 1917 & May, 1917.

Private Cowan joined 48th Battalion at the Front on 4th July, 1917. He was wounded in action on 11th October, 1917 & invalided to England with GSW to knee & back.

Private James Cowan was admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England on 22nd November, 1917 with G.S.W. to right knee – severe. The Hospital Admissions form records on 16th October, 1917 “Gas gangrene amputated above knee”.

Private James Cowan died on 24th November, 1917 from wounds received in action. A request was made & approved for Private Cowan to be buried in Balmoral Cemetery, Belfast.
