Biography contributed by Adelaide High School

John Bernard Buckley was the son of Mrs. H Buckley and Mr. Y Buckley, born in approximately April 1898. He lived in the suburb of Mile-End, after moving from Medindie, the place of his birth and worked as a labourer. This hazel eyed, brown haired gentleman weighed 110lb (49.9kg) and was 5 feet 4 ½ inches tall at the age of 18 years and 4 months.

He enlisted in September 1916 and arrived at his unit in France in November 1917.

Mr. Buckley was wounded through battle in France on the 23rd of August 1918, when the battalion committed to another attack around Proyart, on the same day. This attack was very successful, having the battalion progress 6,000 yards (5,500m) to an imperative area around Cappy. [1] He recovered from his wound in England and was sent back to his unit In October, after the Australians had ceased their involvement in active operations.

He returned to Australia in August 1919.

In 1927, the battalion was awarded 24 battle honours for its service at war and was a part of at least 5 considerable events; Battle of Amiens, Battle of Pozieres, German Spring Offensive, The landing at ANZAC Cove and Versailles Peace Treaty.
