Brian was the fourth child of Joseph and Mabel Hayes of Moonan Brook, near Scone NSW. He attended Moonan Brook Public School.
Brian worked all over the district as a station-hand and labourer. He was also known to be a very good horseman, and was a well respected local.
On 6th July 1940, Brian married Anne Adams at West Wallsend within 3 weeks of enlisting for service.
He enlisted at Newcastle West on 22 July 1940, and underwent training until embarking at Sydney on 29 July 1941. Brian and his mates disembarked at Singapore. They were in the 2/30 Battalion.
On 16 February 1922, Brian was listed as missing. Later it was confirmed that he was a Japanese Prisoner of War in Changi Camp.
During his time as a POW, Brian was forced to work on the Burma Railway.
Brian and his fellow inmates were recovered from Changi Camp on 5 September 1945. The sailed home on the "Esperence Bay", arriving in Sydney 34 days later.
After the war Brian returned to the land with Anne by his side. He managed many properties in the Central West and near Tamworth. Eventually they bought their own home in Macarthur Street, Parkes, where they retired.
Their annual holiday was spent at Yamba on the NSW North Coast, with friends from the war years.
Brian and Anne were not able to have children.
