William Paul White began his military career by lying about his age and enlisting in the 1st Machine Gun Company (Royal NSW Lancers) in the 1930s.

He was promoted to Corporal prior to enlisting in the 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion, AIF, in 1941.

He subsequently served with that unit in Palestine, Syria, Egypt and New Guinea.
