Arnold enlisted with the Northumberland Fusiliers on 9th November 1914 and he was appointed a Lance Corporal on 25th February 1915. He embarked for France on 10th January 1916 with the 21st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers and he was appointed an unpaid Lance Sergeant on 11th January 1916. In February and March 1917 he displayed distinguished gallantry and he was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal and Bar. Arnold was nominated for a Temporary commission and he embarked for England on 22nd June 1917 and he attended the 14th Officer Cadet Battalion from the 10th August 1917. He successfully completed this training and he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on 28th November 1917. He embarked for France and he rejoined the Northumberland Fusiliers where he again showed splendid gallantry by winning a Military Cross. After the armistice he returned to England where he married Violet Anne Lowson in 1918. He was discharged on 29th January 1919 and in 1922 they came to Australia and they lived in the Wonthaggi area of Victoria. During the Second World War he enlisted with the 2nd Australian Imperial Force on 16th December 1941 and he served as a Lieutenant with the 4th Employment Company within Australian till his discharge on 14th November 1944.

"For remarkable skill and courage with a reconnoitering patrol of two men, when he rushed a machine-gun post, capturing two guns and seven prisoners and killing two men. He then went back for two extra sections and proceeded to rush another machine gun, capturing the gun and one prisoner and killing eight of the enemy."

"For conspicuous gallantry in action. He organised the bomb supply and himself assisted in a bombing attack, setting a splendid example to the men under him."
3. Bar to Distinguished Conduct Medal, London Gazette 26th March 1917
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemy's trenches. Although wounded, he continued to assist in repelling enemy counter-attacks and safeguarding the rear of the advance party in the enemy second line. He set a splendid example throughout."
