John enlisted as an Air Cadet on 17th January 1938 and he was appointed to a commission in the General Duties Branch on 17th December 1938 with the rank of Pilot Officer after having successfully completed a flying training course. He transferred to the Permanent Air Force and he was granted a permanent commission on 23rd September 1948 with the rank of Squadron Leader in the Pilot Category of the General Duties Branch.
He had active service in the United Kingdom from 23rd September 1940 with 10 Squadron to 4th June 1942. He returned to Australia and he served in Darwin and the South West Pacific area. On 21st June 1950 he served with 38 Transport Squadron in Malaya and also with 90 Composite Wing. On his return he serve various postings within Australia and by 1st July 1955 he was promoted to the rank of Group Captain. His last overseas appointment was in Vietnam as a Air Commodore with Headquarters Australian Force Vietnam (RAAF Element) from 16th May 1967 to 1st May 1968.He was placed on the Retired List with the Honorary Rank of Air Vice Marshal on 18th December 1970.

"Air Commodore John Fullarton Lush, OBE, assumed duty as Commander Royal Australian Air Force, Vietnam, as Deputy Commander Australian Force, Vietnam, on 16th May , 1967. He fulfilled both of these appointments with considerable distinction until returning to Australia on 29th March 1968. Air Commodore Lush, by his vigorous leadership, wealth of experience and Spirit of co-operation, made a significant contribution to the smooth integration and co-operation of RAAF Units with other Australian and Free World Forces in Vietnam. Under his guidance RAAF Units achieved a high level of competence which enabled the units to achieve results far in excess of what would normally be expected. The efficiency, aggressiveness and professional skill with which Air Commodore Lush executed his duties earned for him the highest respect of the Commanders of the Free World Forces and reflected great credit upon himself and the Royal Australian Air Force."
