An Original Anzac and Boer War Veteran who served twice during The Great War and is resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

76 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 16th July 1946, Corporal Edward Stewart (Stuart/James) Young, 2nd Battalion & 4th Australian Field Bakery (Reg Nos-125 & 15287), baker and linesman from 33 Perkins Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and 36 Wolfe Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 63. ANGLICAN 3-172. 54.

Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 12.1.1883 (as Edward Stuart) to Edward Archibald and Mary Jane Young; husband of Jane Victoria Young nee Hill (married 1906, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1966, sleeping here), Edward enlisted on the 27th August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion at Randwick, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 29.1.1915 (rheumatism).
Edward returned home on the 15th April 1915, being discharged medically unfit (rheumatism) on the 4th August 1915.


Reenlisted-2.10.1917, (Australian Army Service Corps, 4th Australian Field Bakery, as Edward James) at Sydney, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 18.1.1918 (enterobius vermicularis - pinworm), 11.6.1918 (threadworm), 2.12.1918 (appendicitis), 21.12.1918 (chronic gastritis), 22.3.1919 (not stated).

Edward again returned home June 1919, being discharged on the 28th August 1919.

Mr. Young’s name has not been inscribed on the Newcastle Operative Bakers' Society Roll of Honour or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

Received all 3 War Medals, but service record indicates Medals recalled 13.10.1924. (John Gillam).

I located this Forgotten Digger resting in an unmarked grave, so June 2022 I placed a cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
