Harold Talbot Day was born in Footscray Victoria on the 26.3 1888. He was issued with Service number 2898 and served with the 48th Infantry Battalion. Harold enlisted on the 23.8.16 at Perth, aged 28 years 3 months. His occupation was farmer and his denomination, Church of England. His next of kin was wife: Esther Alice Day (née Gunnyon), originally of 69 Skinner St, Fremantle, then 17 Barnett St. They had married at Scots Church Fremantle on the 11.11.1913. (Her brothers John Robert Gunnyon and Walter Gunnyon also enlisted). Harold was described as being 5 feet 8½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 34-38 inches, fresh complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. Initially a Private, he was promoted to Corporal on the 28.10.16 but reverted to the rank of Private on 11.1.17. He embarked at Fremantle on the Argylshire on the 9.11.16, serving in France and Belgium. Harold returned to Australia on the Bremen on the 4.6.19, disembarking at Fremantle on the 18.7.1919. He was discharged on the 23.8.1919. After the war, he had a farm about 8 miles south of Kulin and was the Foundation President of the Kulin Branch of the RSL. In 1920, he was elected President of the Committee organising the Agricultural Show, joined the Country Party and was also a football umpire, commended for his fairness. In 1921, the returned soldiers of the district began a tradition of holding a Boxing Day event that included races and competitions during the day, a Christmas Tree and presents from Santa for the children and a social evening for the adults. During WW2, Harold enlisted on the 22 April 1942 at Kulin, aged 54 years 1 month for part-time service. His service number was W73942.  He was described as having greyish hair and hazel eyes. His unit was VDC 10th Battalion in Narrogin. He served for a year in the Transport Company HQ. Harold died aged 80 on the 3.2.1969 in Brentwood. He is memorialised at Karrakatta Cemetery Rose Garden 9N site 0063.
