Son of Eliza and William WOODS of Subiaco
He joined the Royal Navy for a period of five years, and went on board the H.M.S.Challenge at Fremantle on the 10th May 1910.
Later in 1913, he transferred to tIle Royal Australian Navy, and joined the HMAS Australia. In October 1913, he returned to Sydney. On account of war breaking out before he received his discharge, he was kept on until the cessation of hostilities. In July 1917, he had a severe illness, and was invalided to Australia. Later he was sent on board the troopship Euripides to recuperate. In February 1918, he joined the HMAS Brisbae, and after patrolling the coast until October, set out on the return voyage to England. Owing to the signing of Armistice beofre their arrival, they lay for six weeks in charge of a small Allied fleet. They then proceeded to England, and soon after he came home for demobilisation, and was discharged on the 28th July 1919 after 9 1/2 years' service.
