Served as  a Quartermaster Sergeant in the South African Artillery 7th Citizens Battery in South West Africa.

He was Mentioned in Despatches.

Married Dorothy Blyth on 28 September 1915, in Norwood, South Australia, Australia.

They were the parents of at least 2 sons.

James died in 1969, in Uckfield, Sussex, England, United Kingdom, at the age of 92 years.
