George Colvin was born in 1897, the son of James and Elizabeth (Yates) Colvin of Norong Central, near Rutherglen in rural Victoria, Australia. Like his father George was a farmer.
George enlisted as a Private with the 22nd Australian Infantry Battalion on 13 March 1916 at the age of 18. He arrived at home from Seymour Camp on 6 May 1916 where he was diagnosed with cerebro spinal meningitis. The course of his illness was documented in local newspaper reports as the family farm was subjected to a mandatory quarantine.
The reports show that George was originally believed to be recovering however he succumbed to his illness at home on 22 September 1916. He is buried in the Carlyle Cemetery near Rutherglen, Victoria.
His older brother 2nd Lieutenant William Colvin had been killed in France on 25 July 1916 during the time of his illness.
