Youngest son of Reuben and Matilda HERROD, Horace was educated at the Paddington Superior Public School. He began his apprenticeship with the Sydney Morning Herald in the linotype department in 1907.

In December 1915, he enlisted as a Sapper in the 7th Field Company Engineers of the following year. He left for France in March and was engaged principally in building dug-outs and light railways. He was killed on January 8, 1917 near Albert.

A brother, Quartermaster-Sergeant Victor Herrod, enlisted at the outbrak of the war and saw considerable service.
