Fred arrived in Australia in 1888, as an 18 year old man on the ship 'Dorunda' into the port of Brisbane.

In 1899, Fred married Ann Jane Fredrickson in Queensland.  Anne Jane died in 1908 of heart failure  in Queensland.

Fred later married Margaret WILKINSON.

Fred Knowlton enlisted in Adelaide on the, 25th July 1918,  after the death of his son, Private Thomas Henry KNOWLTON who was killed in Action on the 17th January 1917 in France.  Fred was in his 49th year.

Fred was discharged on the 11th March 1919.
