Lest We Forget
Barnaby Roxley Lyne (Corporal)
My Grandfather. Great Grandfather to James Marshall and Joshua Marshall.
Barney Lyne enlisted in the 2nd AIF on the 20th of November 1939 and served in the 2/12 Battalion. He embarked for England on the Queen Mary on Sunday the 5th of May 1940.
After training in England (during the Battle of Britain), the Battalion was sent to North Africa where they ended up in Tobruk during the seige, proudly accepting the name "Rats of Tobruk". He regularly undertook patrols out at night to harrass the Germans and Italians.
He was evacuated from Tobruk due to illness and eventually found his way back to Australia where he was discharged on 25th of August 1942.
After the war he joined the Australian Public Service where he became Commissioner for Repatriation for Queensland, Torres Straight Islands and Papua New Guinea during the 1960's and 1970's.
