Stanley was the youngest of four children of Hubert Ernest Henry Barnett (born 1859 in Smythesdale, Victoria) and Ethel Pauline Richards (born 1866 in Surrey in England). Hubert and Ethel married in 1898 in Mildura, Victoria where Hubert was a Horticulturalist.

Stanley was living in Ballarat, Victoria and working as a Commercial Traveller when he married Doris Victoria Edwards (born 1899 in Ballarat, Victoria). Stanley and Doris settled in Merlynston in Coburg, Victoria and Stanley commenced working for the Victorian Railways - he had completed a Diploma of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Stan was an Electrical Fitter with the Railways when he enlisted in Wesley, Victoria with the AMF in 1939. He served with Signals 4 Division as a Lieutenant (Service No: V54014), In 1942, he transferred to the Australian Army Signals Divional as Captain (Service No: VX133285).He was Discharged in December 1944.

Stan and Doris lived in Merlynston in Coburg, Victoria where he continued working for Victorian Railways until his death in 1966. Doris died in 1984 in Cheltenham, Victoria
