Vernon (Roge) was the eldest of four children of Vernon Baynes (born 1885 in Essex in England) and Isabelle (Belle) emily Margeurite Schmidt (born 1893 in Noumea, New Caledonia). Vernon had arrived in Australia in 1910 and was working at Palan Creek in Beaudesert, QLD in the timber mill. He returned to England and served with the British Army in WWI as a Lieutenant with the London Regiment. Vernon and Bella married in Noumea in 1922 and settled in Maroubra NSW where Roge was born in 1923.

Roge's younger brother Robert William served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1941 to 1947 as an Able Seaman (Service No: 24974).

Roge enlisted in the AIF in July 1941 and served with 53 Field Battery AIF as a Bombardier (Service No: N272934). Following his Discharge in June 1945 Roge settled in Lane Cove in Sydney, NSW where he worked as a Salesman.

Roge married Gwen Olive McKinnon in Adelaide, South Australia in 1952. Roge was a Company Director in Pymble, NSW where he lived with his second wife, Brenda Elizabeth. Roge died in Adelaide South Australia in 1983.
