Robert was the second of four children born to Vernon Baynes (born 1885 in Essex in England) and Isabelle (Belle) Emily Margeurite Schmidt (born 1893 in New Caledonia). Vernon had arrived in Australia in 1910 to work in the Timber Mill at Palan Creek in Beaudesert, QLD. He returned to England and served in WWI with the British Army as a 2nd Lieutenant (Regimental No: 3709) in the London Regiment. In 1922 Vernon married Belle in Noumea, New Caledonia and they settled in Maroubra in NSW,
Robert was an apprentice carpenter when he enlisted in the RAN in 1941, serving on HMAS Rushcutter, Cerberus and Shropshire as an Ordinary Seaman and Able Seaman (Service No: 24974). He was Discharged in February 1947.
Robert returned to Maroubra and worked as a Carpenter. He married Hazel Mary Grigg (born 1924 in Leeton, NSW) in 1948 in Sydney, NSW, Hazel had served in the RAAF with 2 Personnel Depot Staff as an Aircraftwoman (Service No: 178132) in 1945/1946.
By 1954 the family moved to Cronulla in NSW where Robert was a Builder, and then a Supervisor. Robert died in Sydney in 2013 and Hazel in 2007
